The Great Depression

THE Depression - PERIOD OF SEVERE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL HARDSHIP, MASSIVE UNEMPLOYMENT AND TERRIBLE SUFFERING
protectionism -a system of using tarrifs to raise the price of imported goods in order to protect domestic producers
equalization payments - payments made byt the federal government to some provinces so that the standard of living will be more uniform across canada
appeasement - the granting of concessions in order to maintain peace
isolationists - people that hold the belief that one's country should keep sepatate from the politics and disputes of other countries.
1929 (1) N.Y stock market crashes on wall street
1930 (1) R.B Bennet becomes prime minister
1931 (3) Severe drought devastates the praries. City dwellers outnumber rural population for the first time in canada. Japan invades Manchuria.
1932 (1) Cooperative Commonwealth federation (CCF) established
1933 (3) Unemployment hits highest level. Federal relief camps established. Hitler comes to power in Germany.
1935 (3) On-to-Ottawa trek occurs. Mackenzie king elected prime minister again. Italy invades Abyssinia (Ethiopia)
1936 (2) Canadian Broadcasting corporation established. Germany sends troops to the Rhine land.
1937 (1) Royal commission on Dominion Provincial Relations created
1938 (1) Kristallnacht takes place in Germany, as Nazi followers attack Jewish businesses. Germany anexes Austria.
1939 (3) Germany invades Czechoslovakia. Germany and Soviet Union sign non-aggression treaty. Germany invades poland.
buying on margin - buying shares with onlyt 10 percent down payment. Was assumed that if stocks continue increasing (like they had been for 10 years) remaining 90 percent would be paid.
pogey government relief payments given to those who had no alternative source of income
prime minister mackenzie king - beleived situation was temporary, and economy would recover. Beleived the impoverished were the responsability of the municipal and federal gov't. "5 cent piece"
R.B. Bennet - conservative ledar, became p.m in 1930. Beleived that joblessness was the result of lazyness. Raised tarrifs by 50 percent, made work camps.
work camps - created to deter communism, 170 000 men, worked for 20 cents/day
On-to-ottaawa trek - journey to ottawa, made by work camp workers to protest condition
vancouver protests - government closed work camps and reduced relief payments, many men engaged in sit downs
CCF - socialist party, started in Regina, lead by J.S. Woodsworth, supported public ownership, and social programs, appealed to farmers, labourers, socialists, intellectuals, and discontented Liberals.
william aberheart leader of social credit party, charismatic preacher and highschool teacher in calgary. Anti-capitalism, felt that gov't should release money into the economy. Promised each citizen 25 dollars/month for necessities, forbade by feds.
Mitch Hepburn - came into power in ontario durring 1934 election, populist farmer. Rallied against big buisinesses. Conservative at heart, supressed strikes, did little for unemployed.
Maurice Duplessis - Quebec, fromer conservative, brought Union Nationale to power in 1936. Nationalistic french canadian perty, supported by catholic church and rural voters. Premier until 1959.
Dufferin Patullo - liberal in BC, elected in 1933m strong beleiver in greater provincial spending power. Introduced reforms, shortened work day, increased minimum wage and increased relief payments by 20 percent. Launched public works, challenged by feds.
Mackenzie king return - 1935, set up commission to examine state of unemployment in 1936, views clashed. Recommeneded gov't spend millions of dollars in job creation and training programs. King only spent fraction.
stallin - soviet leader took over Communist party after 1917 revolution. agricultural and economic policies caused deaths of milllions of soviet workers.
musollini - came to power in 1922 in Italy. Fascist government.
totallitarian state - where every aspect of peopleès lives are controlled by the communist party
fascism - governments that are opposed to democracy, extremely nationalistic, rely on military and police power to maintain absolute control. Control mediam and promote propaganda about state.
kristallnacht - November 9, 1938, NAzi mobs attacked jewish buisinesses and property
japan> manchuria - manchuria= chinease industrial province
