What is a broad-spectrum antibiotic? an antibiotic that is effective against many microorganisms
What is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic? an antibiotic that is effective against only a few
Penicillan is derived from what? the penicillium mold
What type of penicillil was developed to better absorb orgally and also treats respiratory infections, cutaneous anthrax, ginivitis, and prevention of rheumatic fever recurrances?? penicillin V potassium
Also derived originally from a mold is what? cephalosporins
These agents are effective against organisms such as streptococci and some strains of staphylococci: first generation cephalosporins
In addition to activity against strep and staph, these agents are also effective against Haemophilus influenza: second generation cephalosporins
This group is less effective against the strep and pneumococci, but more effective against the gram-negative invaders of the gastrointestinal and urinary tract. Reserved for serious infections third generation cephalosporins
Only one of these agents is available at present; Cefepime (Maxipime) is used to treat urinary tract infections, including those associated with pyelonephritis fourth generation cephalosporins
This is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is effective against many organisms, particulary those infecting the respiratory system and soft tissues tetracyclines
