QuestionAnswer
Name three Network Services Files Services, Print Services, Web Services
What is an Application Server? Application servers run certain software applications that can be accessed by users.
What is a Database Server? Computers dedicated to running database programs
Describe a Gateway A gateway is used to connect two dissimilar systems (such as an Ethernet and Token Ring network) and translate the data back and forth so two dissimilar systems can communicate.
What does a Router do? A router is designed to connect two or more network segments that may or may not be dissimilar. Routers provide alternate paths between network segments and can select the best path based on criteria such as line cost, line speed, and traffic load.
What is a Bridge? Segments a subnet by recording MAC addy and the associated segment where the device is located. A bridge is similar to a router in that it connects 2 or more physical network segments; segments connected by a bridge are one logical network segment.
What is a Firewall? A firewall filters traffic from the Internet
Define a Proxy? It hides your private network from the Internet and from public networks. A server running as a firewall can also be a proxy. The proxy server has clients connect to it to request a resource available on another server.
What is RAS? Remote Access Services (RAS) allow access to the network when users are unable to connect directly to a network segment. Remote access enables employees who are offsite to use network resources, including printers and e-mail.
Define DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) dynamically assigns an IP address, a subnet mask, a default gateway address, and a DNS server address to a workstation whenever the workstation comes up.
Define DNS Domain Name Service (DNS) is a service that matches an IP address with a domain name. Whenever a user enters a domain name, the workstation sends the domain name to the DNS server which resolves the address and provides the IP address.
Define WINS Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) is a service similar to DNS. On NT systems, NetBIOS names have to be resolved to IP addresses. WINS maintains the table that correlates NetBIOS addy with IP addy and provides that information to requesting workstati
Define SNA System Network Architecture (SNA) uses a Host Integration Server to connect IBM mainframe and mid-range system users to a local area network. The server eliminates the need for client software running on the SNA system.
What is a Dedicated Application Server? A dedicated application server model has one physical hardware server and one application.
What is a Distributed Application Server? A distributed application server model is similar to a dedicated application model in that it is used for only one network application. However, in a distributed application server model, the network application is run on many servers concurrently.
What is a Peer 2 Peer? ? A (P2P) app server model is similar to a distributed app server -- multi instances of an application can be running on multi systems. Each system can run the apps as either a server, or as a client with the app being provided by another OS functioning a

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
