What are the SSRIs and what are they used for? Selective Seritonin Reuptake Inhibitors: anti-depressant

Side effects of SSRI'S..HINT: SSRI Suicide, serotonin syndrome, reproduction dysfunction, insomnia
Symptoms of serotonin syndrome agitation, hyperthermia, tremors
What do MAO's treat. Depression
How do they work? Inhibits an enzyme MAO that is responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters. Also breaks down tyramine which controls blood pressure.
Give example of MAO selegiline (Eldepryl) also (P-N for psych nurse) -(Parnate) and (Nardil);
What are the side/adverse effects of MAOIs? CNS Stimulation(nervousness, increased B/P, and HR. HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS (resulting from intake of tyramine):
What are some tyramine-rich foods? Aged cheese, pepperoni, salami, avocados, figs, bananas, smoked fish, protein, some dietary
What does lithium treat? bipolar
Nursing considerations for lithium Need regular blood work. It's a salt. Avoid using table salt.
Lithium toxicity drowsiness, blurred vision, confusion, tremors, coma
How long does it take for antidepressant medication to work? 2-4 weeks
What are TCAs and give an example 3 ringed chemical that keeps norepinephrine and serotonin in the nerve terminals. Used for Depression, Depressive episodes of bipolar disorder. Example amitriptyline (Elavil)
What are the side/adverse effects of TCAs Orthostatic hypotension; Anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation, tachycardia)
What does the neurotransmitter dopamine do? Neurotransmitter of pleasure and coordinated movement.
Schizophrenia patients are thought to have an excess of what neurotransmitter? dopamine
Example of dopamine antagonist? chlorpromazine (Thorazine), thioridazine (Mellaril ), clozapine (Clopine),
Common side-effects of dopamine antagonist sedation, dystonia, expyramidal effects (uncoordinated movement-too little dopamine)
What does the neurotransmitter gaba(for short) do? Inhibitory neurotransmitter that quiets nerves.
How do benzodiazepines work? Enhance gaba
Ending and Example of a benzodiazepine Pam-diazepam (valium), lorazepam (ativan)..end in PAM-she's an anxious lady.;)
What are benzodiazepines used for? anxiety, seizures, deliurium tremors
Benzodiazepine side effects drowsiness, sedation, amnesia, confusion
