Hydrosphere Grade 5
Term | Definition |

Surface water | All water that is on the surface of the Earth such as creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans. |
Evaporation | The process that gradually changes water in a liquid state into water vapor. |
Water Cycle | The constant cycling of the Earth's water between the surface and the atmosphere through evaporation, condensation and precipitation. |
Hydrosphere | All the water on the Earth surface, below the surface, and in the atmosphere. |
Precipitation | Water that falls to the surface as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
Runoff | Water that is not absorbed into the surface but flows over the ground to streams, lakes, and eventually to the ocean. |
Infiltration | Water that is absorbed into the ground. |
Groundwater | Water that soaks into the ground and collects in the spaces between soil and rocks. |
Reservoirs | Places on the surface where water collects on the surface such as ponds, lakes, ice, and oceans. |
