Chumash 11-18-16

questions from parashat Chukat, perek Chaf Aleph

QuestionAnswer
Translate מכאן. From here.
What is Rashi's question on the words ולאבותנו? If the Avot are already dead, why is it troubling to them to be watching B'nei Yisroel's hardships?
What do we learn from the Rashi ולאבותנו? That our ancestors watch over us and care about us even after they are dead.
Translate ויסעו. They traveled.
Where does Aharon die? Hor Hahar (הר ההר)
How long do the Jews mourn for Aharon? 30 days.
What does צידוק הדין mean? Accepting Hashem's judgement as FAIR and RIGHT.
Where do we see צידוק הדין in our perek? B'nei Yisroel and Aharon and Moshe accepted Aharon's death.
Where do we see thinking ahead in our perek? Hashem thought ahead and left up 3 mountains he would need when he flattened the desert.
Which three mountains did Hashem leave standing? Why? Hor Hahar to bury Aharon, Har Nevo to bury Moshe, and Har Sini to get the Torah.
What is Rashi's question on the words כח את אהרון? How do you take a person?
What is rashi's answer to the question "how do you take a person"? With comforting words.
What lesson (מוסר) do we learn from how to take a person? כח הדיבור- strength of words.
What comforting words did Moshe use to tell Aharon that he was going to die? he said, "you are lucky that you will see your crown given to your son"
What is Rashi's question on the words "כל בית 'שראל"? Why did everyone mourn for Aharon? That isn't how they reacted to Miriam's death.
What is Rashi's answer to why everyone mourned for Aharon and not Miriam? Because Aharon was the one who kept peace among B'nei Yisroel, and they worried about who would stop them from arguing.
What did Hashem do for B'nei Yisroel when they kept peace among themselves? He kept peace among their enemies.
What is the lesson (מוסר) that we learn from Aharon's love of peace? אוהב שלום ורודף שלום- love peace and chase after peace.
Translate השרפים. Burning.
Translate וינשכו. They bit.
What did the Canaanim hear about that caused them to attack B'nei Yisroel? They heard that Aharon died.
Why did Hashem send burning snakes? As punishment for complaining about the Maan.
Why did Amalek try to disguise themselves before attacking according to Rashi (יושב הנגב)? Because they thought that if the Jews prayed for Hashem to save them from AMALEK, He would, but if they prayed for Hashem to save them from Canaanites, they would still be able to attack.
What lesson do we learn from the Amalekim trying to disguise themselves, and how? כח התפילה- because even Amalek knew that Hashem listens to B'nei Yisroel's prayers.
Why does Hashem send a snake to punish B'nei Yisroel (according to rashi)? Because to a snake everything has one taste, and the Maan was one thing with every taste, and B'nei Yisroel still complained.
What is the punishment in the form of a snake an example of? מידה כנגד מידה
Translate נחושת. Copper.
What did Moshe do when the people asked him to daven for them? He davened RIGHT AWAY.
What did Hashem tell Moshe to do to cure the people of the snakes? He told Moshe to put up a copper snake on a flagpole, and when B'nei Yisroel stared at the snake they would be healed.
What do we learn about forgiveness from Rashi ויתפלל משה? To forgive right away.
How could staring at a snake heal B'nei Yisroel if it was a snake that originally caused the harm (Rashi כל הנשוך)? It wasn't the snake, it was Hashem behind both actions- Hashem sent snakes, and when B'nei Yisroel stared at the flagpole and did Teshuva they were healed.
What is one example of how someones biggest challenge could be their biggest strength. Someone's laziness might prevent them from going with their friends and doing something they shouldn't.
Why was Moshe afraid to fight Og if he wasn't afraid any other time they had to fight someone (rashi אל-תירא אתו)? Hashem owed Og a favor for letting Avraham know about Lot being captured, and Moshe was afraid Hashem would repay it now.
What lesson can we learn from Moshe being afraid to fight Og? ה' נאמן לשלם שחר- Hashem is trustworthy to repay reward/Mitzvot.
Who did Moav turn to for advice when they were scared of the Jews? Midyan.
Why did Moav turn to Midyan for advice (Rashi אל זקני מדין)? Because Moshe lived in Midyan for a while, so they might know some of his weaknesses.
What did Midyan tell Moav was Moshe's strength? They told Moav his strength was in words.
What did Moav do when they found out that Moshe's strength was in his words? They sent for בלעם, whose strength was also in his words.
