salicylates - SE bleeding
NSAIDS - SE GI distress, GI bleeding,
NSAID GI problems are lessened with ____ inhibitors COX-2
antiinflammatory- GI effects are commonly associated with : aspirin
Chronic salicylate intoxication symptoms (adults): tinnitus & hearing loss
Chronic salicylate intoxication symptoms (kids) hyperventilation & CNS effects
Acute salicylate overdose Similar to chronic, but effects are more pronounced & occur more quickly
nonsalicylate NSAID overdose: similar effects, just not as extensive or dangerous
Immunosuppressants - SE heightened susceptibility to opportunistic infections
Azathioprine & Cyclosporine SE blood dyscrasias, hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity
Muromonab-CD3 SE chest pain, chills, GI symptoms, flulike symptoms, fluid retention
Sulfonamides allergic reactions, leukopenia, nausea, vomiting, renal failure
Penicillins allergic reactions - urticaria (hives), pruritus (itching), angioedema (swollen lips); SE: GI in nature, lethargy, anemia, increased bleeding, rash
Cephalosporins decrease effectiveness of BC pills, cross-sensitivity w/ penicillins
Macrolides GI tract, compete w/ other drugs for hepatic metabolism
Tetracyclines teeth discoloration (not for kids/preg.), photosensitivity, superinfections, alter vaginal floral, retard fetal skeletal development; no dairy
Aminoglycosides ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity *do BUN, creatine and CBC
Fluoroquines not for children (affects cartilage dev., pts on antiarrhythmic agents), headache, diziness, insomnia, nausea, constipation, heartburn, photosensitivity; don't use w/ antacids, iron or zinc
Vancomycin (vancocin) narrow therapeutic range - ototoxicity & nephrotoxicity
Isoniazid (INH) do not drink alcohol while on this!! Hard on liver, take Vitamin B6
antifungals drug interactions & hepatotoxicity are primary concerns - need ALT & AST blood tests
antiprotozoal agents do not take w/ alcohol- causes flushing, nausea & vomiting,
helminithic not for pregnant women
