Matter Vocabulary

matter material that takes up space and has mass
mass the amount of matter in an object
volume the size of an object
law of conservation of matter scientific law that states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed but can change states
physical change a process that does not change the chemical make up in a substance
chemical change a process that involves a change in the chemical make up of the substance
solid has definite size (volume) and shape; particles are packed together tightly and movement is not fast
liquid has a definite size (volume) but no definite shape; particles are more active and farther apart than a solid
gas has no definite size (volume) or shape: particles are far apart and move very fast
plasma the basic state of matter on the surface of the sun
condensation a change from a gaseous to a liquid state, caused by a decrease in temperature
evaporation a change from a liquid to a gaseous state, caused when a liquid is heated to its boiling point
freezing a change from a liquid to a solid state, caused when a substance reaches the freezing point
melting a change from a solid to a liquid state, caused by an increase in temperature to the meting point of the substance
