Chapter 2-2 Science

7th Grade Earth Science Heat Transfer

TermDefinition
Temperature A measure of how hot or cold an object is compared to a reference point. (Review p. 43)
Thermal Energy The total energy of motion in the particles (molecules) of a substance. (p. 43)
Thermometer An instrument used to measure temperature (p. 43).
Heat The transfer of thermal energy from one object to another because of a difference in temperature. (p. 44)
Conduction The direct transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another that it is touching. (p. 44)
Convection The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a fluid (p. 44).
Convection Currents The circulation of a fluid as it alternately heats up and cools down (p. 44).
Molecules Gases are made of small particles, called ______________ that are constantly moving.
Faster/Slower ____________ molecules have more energy, while ____________ molecules have less energy.
2. Temperature 2. ____________________ the average amount of energy of motion of each molecule of a substance.
1. Radiation 2. Conduction 3. Convection Three ways heat is transferred
Troposphere All three types of heat transfer work together to heat the ____________________________.
Radiation You cannot see it, but you can feel it as heat.
1.5 Conduction 1.5 The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another that is touching.
2. Conduction 2. Walking barefoot on hot sand
Convection The cat is sitting on top of the fireplace and the heat is rising to warm the cat.
Example of radiation Sun shining down on a glass of water
Example of Convection current A puddle on the street during the day heats up, then as the sun goes down the puddle cools.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
