Chapter 2-1 Science

7th Grade Earth Science Energy in Earth's Atmosphere

TermDefinition
Electromagnetic Waves Waves that transfer electric and magnetic energy through the vacuum of space.
Radiation The direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
Infrared Radiation Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths that are longer than visible light but shorter than microwaves
Ultraviolet Radiation Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths that are shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays. Shorter than violet light.
Scattering Reflection of light in all directions
Greenhouse Effect The process by which heat is trapped in the atmosphere by gases that form a "blanket" around Earth.
2. Electromagnetic waves 2. Energy Travels from the sun as ________________ ________________.
UV Radiation Sunburns are caused by ___ __________________.
2. Infrared Radiation 2. When Earth's surface is heated it radiates some of the energy back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation.
Visible Light Visible light includes all of the colors that you see in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Red and orange light have the longest wavelengths, while blue and violet have shorter wavelengths.
2. Ultraviolet radiation 2. What type of radiation has wavelengths that are shorter than visible light?
Why are sunsets red? As the sun gets closer to the earth, the wavelengths of visible light are longer. As sunlight disappears visible light comes in shorter wavelengths showing colors like blue and purple.
50% of the sun's energy What percent is absorbed by Earth's surface? This energy heats the land and water.
25% of sunlight What percent of incoming sunlight is reflected by clouds, dust, and gases in the air.
5% What percent of sunlight is reflected by the surface back into the atmosphere?
20% What percent of sunlight is absorbed by gases and particles in the atmosphere.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
