Vocabulary Terms for our Scientific Method Test
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Scientific Method | Problem solving guide that utilizes specific steps such as Problem, Purpose, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data/Results, Conclusion |
Problem | Written as a question: experiment must answer the problem |
Purpose | Changes the problem to the goal; to determine, to observe |
Hypothesis | Educated guess based on research |
Prediction | Based on facts and information; it is what a person believes the result of the experiment will be |
Materials | Supplies, equipment, tools needed to complete the investigation |
Procedure | Plan; specific, sequential/ordered steps that are used to test the hypothesis |
Data | Information collected during the investigation; statistics recorded during the experiment or test |
Results | Answers that can be measured; also known as the dependent variable |
Graphic Organizer | Visual Picture of the results; table, chart, graph |
Conclusion | Summary of the experiment, uses data to support or disprove the hypothesis, what what learned |
Controlled Experiment | An investigation where a scientist manipulates/changes only one variable |
Control Group | Group of test objects/subjects left untreated or untested and then compared to treated objects/subjects to validate results |
Experimental Group | Group being tested or treated with the independent variable |
Variable | Object or quantity that is changed/manipulated in an experiment, located on the X axis |
Dependent Variable | Results of the investigation based on the independent variable; are measured; found on the Y-axis |
Scientific Processes | Skills/Actions used during the experiment to observe, compare, order, categorize, communicate, relate, infer and apply |
Qualitative Observation | Ability to pay attention to details by using all five senses, along with noting and recording the results |
Quantitative Observation | Observations using instruments that result in measurements |
Inference | Making a judgement or thought based on information that cannot be directly observed |
Interpret | To explain or clarify the meaning of something |
Analyze | Logical; to look for patterns; reasonable |
Collaboration | Working together as a team or partner; listening and sharing ideas; teamwork |
Science | Knowledge of the world gained through observation and experimentation |
