End of unity study guide
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Energy | The ability to cause change |
Mechanical Energy | Energy that moves objects |
Sound Energy | results from the vibration of particles on a solid, liquid, or gas |
Chemical energy | Energy that is stored in the chemical composition of matter |
Thermal Energy | The total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter |
Electromagnetic Energy | Transmitted through space in the form of invisible waves |
Nuclear energy | When a heavy atom's nucleus breaks apart or the joining of two atoms |
Kinetic energy | The energy of motion |
Potential energy | Stored energy that an object has due to it position or chemical composition |
mass | A measure of how much matter an object is made of |
Matter | Anything that takes up space. Solid, liquid, gas |
Thermometer | device used to measure temperature |
Temperature | measured in ºC and ºF |
Conduction | the process that moves energy from one object to another |
Conductors | Materials that transfer energy easily. Keeps heat out |
Insulators | poor conductors of energy. Keeps heat in |
Convection | The process that transfers energy by the movement of large numbers of particles in the same direction within a liquid or gas. |
Radiation | Energy that travels as electromagnetic waves |
ºC | Water freezes at 0℃ Water boils at 100℃ |
℉ | Water freezes at 32℉ Water boils at 212℉ |
Conduction, convection, radiation | 3 ways thermal energy is transferred |
Heat | another term for thermal energy |
Scientific Method | Process for experiments |
Hypothesis | prediction written as an if_____ then statement |
