Obligatory(adjective) Mandatory,required. Example: It is obligatory to show your passport before leaving the country.
Decadence(noun) excessive and harmful self-indulgence. Example: King Louis XIV has been accused of great decadence; he spent his subjects' tax $ on riches and personal luxuries instead of on improvements to his kingdom.
Avant-Garde(adjective) experimental, daring. Example: Modern dance is very avant-garde because it pushes the boundaries of traditional dance.
Prophet(noun) A person who speaks to God. Example: In Islam, it is believed that the prophet Mohammad delivered the messages of God.
Imperialism(noun) The policy of extending the rule of authority of an empire of nation over foreign countries. Example: During the height of British imperialism, India was just another British colony.
Entourage(noun) A group of people that travels with someone of importance. Example: These days, Barack Obama is never seen without his entourage of secret service agents and political advisors.
Frivolity(noun) Self-indulgence, irresponsibility, foolishness. Example: I was shocked by my friend's frivolity during these tough economic times; she had spared no expense on her son's first birthday party.
Martyr(noun) A person who willingly suffers death on behalf of a belief, cause or principle. Example: Martin Luther King, Jr. can be considered a martyr because he died while fighting for American civil rights.
Cadaver(noun) A dead body. Example: The doctor moved the cadaver to the hospital's morgue.
Clandestine(adjective) Secret, Hidden. Example: Fiona had a clandestine stash of chocolate under her bed.
Subversive(adjective) Intended to overthrow or undermine an established government. Example: The subversive underground newspaper criticized the president's decision to go to war.
Coup D' Etat(noun) The overthrow of a government by force. Example: The Russian Revolution resulted in a coup d' etat in which Czar Nicholas II was overthrown.
Flagellate(verb) To whip. Example: During times of slavery, slave-owners would often flagellate their slaves.
Secular(adjective) Not connected to religion Example: The United States, which is a secular society, outlaws prayer in public schools.
Circumspect(adjective) Cautious, careful. Example: Being a very circumspect person, I decided not to get onto the boat without first putting on a life vest.
