What does Anthropology do? Anthropology integrates study of humanity
Holism Theory that parts of whole are intimate interconnection, such that they can't exist independently of the whole, can't be understood w/o reference to whole, regarded as greater than sum of parts. Often applied to mental illness, language, ecology
Ethnography Etic and Emic views
Etic view Outsider POV
Emic view Insider POV
Cultural Relativism Principle that an individual person's beliefs / activities should be understood by others in terms of that individual's own culture.
Ethnocentrism Evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in standards / customs of one's own culture.
Myths Traditional story, especially one concerning early history of a people / explaining some natural or social phenomenon ; Used to study how a society functions
Folktales vs. Legends vs. Urban Legends Folktales - Fictional Stories ; sometimes contain supernatural elements, no elements of time or space, sometimes has moral stance Legends - Actual Events ; have time frame, sometimes hold moral code Urban Legends - Stories that have recently changed
Ritual Reversals Move from one social status to another ; some purification rites involve reversals, especially reversals of roles between men and women
Totems A natural object / animal believed by a particular society to have spiritual significance and adopted by it as an emblem.
Syncretism Fusion of elements from two different cultures
Symbols Physical objects, colors, sounds, movements, scents which convey information through an arbitrary or culturally assigned meaning.
