Rock Cycle
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Weathering | The breaking down of materials such as rocks and minerals by physical, chemical or biological processes. |
Erosion | The movement of sediment or soil from one location to another by means of water, wind or ice. |
Chemical weathering | Breaking up of rock by something like acid rain. |
Deposition | When particles carried by water, ice or wind are deposited or dropped in another location. |
Sedimentary Rock | Sediment gets compacted-- or squeezed-- and cemented together. Look for layers. The only rock with fossils. |
Igneous Rock | Means fire. Magma or lava that has cooled |
Metamorphic Rock | Forms when high temperature and pressure change the rock. |
Rock Cycle | Rocks can change from one type to another over time. Heat, pressure, weathering and erosion can change rocks. |
Uplift | Rising of Earth's crust. Exposes rock to weathering and erosion |
Subsidence | Sinking of Earth's crust. Can lead to basins where sediment can be deposited. |
Rift Zone | Where tectonic plates are pulling apart. Great Rift Zone in Africa. |
Rock | A mixture of minerals and sometimes organic matter. |
Magma | Molten or liquid rock that is underground. |
