Addition Property of Equality | Adding the same number to each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation. |
Subtraction Property of Equality | Subtracting the same number from each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation. |
Multiplication Property of Equality | Multiplying each side of an equation by the same number produces an equivalent equation. |
Division Property of Equality | Dividing each side of an equation by the same number produces an equivalent equation. |
identity | an equation that is true for all values of the variable |
distributive property | a property that can be used t find the product of a number and a sum or difference |
like terms | terms that have the same variable parts |
equivalent equations | equations that have the same solutions |

formula | an equation that relates two or more quantities |
reciprocal | a mathematical expression or function so related to another that their product is one; the quantity obtained by dividing the number one by a given quantity |
variable | a letter that is used to represent one or more numbers |
algebraic expression | an expression that includes at least one variable |
power | an expression that represents repeated multiplication of the same factor |
exponent | the number or variable that represents the number of times the base of a power is used as a factor |
base of a power | the number or expression that is used as a factor in a repeated multiplication |
open sentence | an equation or an equality that contains an algebraic expression |
equation | a mathematical sentence formed by placing the symbol = between two expressions |
inequaltiy | a mathematical sentence formed by placing one of the symbols <, <_, > or >_ between two expressions |
