Computer Vocabulary

TermDefinition
CPU Internal operating unit or "brain" of the computer.
Disk Drive Reads data from and writes data to a disk.
Monitor Displays text and graphics on the screen.
Mouse Used to enter comands.
Keyboard An arrangement of letter, figure, symbol, control, function and editing keys and a numeric keypad used to enter data.
Alphanumeric keys Keys used to enter letters, numbers, and symbols.
Numeric keypad Keys at the right side of the keyboard used to enter numeric copy and to perform calculation.
Function F Keys Used to execute commands, sometimes with other keys. Commands vary with soft ware
Arrow keys Move insertion point left, right, up, and down.
ESC (Escape) Closes a software menu or dialog box.
TAB Moves the insertion point to a preset position.
CAPS LOCK Used to make all capital letters.
SHIFT Makes capital letters and symbols shown at tops of # keys.
CTRL (Control) With other keys, executes commands. Commands vary with software.
ALT (Alternate) With other keys, executes commands. Commands vary with software.
Space Bar Inserts a space in text.
ENTER/RETURN Moves insertion point to margin and down to the next line.Also used to execute commands
DEL (DELETE) Removes text to the right of insertion point.
NUM LOCK Activates/deactivates numeric keypad.
INSERT Activates insert of typeover.
BACKSPACE Deletes the text left of the insertion point.
COMMAND (MAC keyboards only) With another key, executes commands that may vary with software.
