earthquake | the shakings and vibratings of earth |
crust | the outer surface of earth |
fault | a fracture along which blocks of crust on either side have moved relative to one another parallel to the fracture |
mantle | the upper part of earth made by semi body rock called magma |
litosphere | the rigid part of earth consisting of the crust and upper mantle |
lithospheric plates | the regions of the earths crust and upper mantle |
seismologist | a person who study's earthquakes |
convergent | two plates that slides towards each other which make one plate slide under the other plate which goes over |
divergent | two plates that slide away from each other |
transform | Two plates that slide against each other |
subduction | the sideward and downward movement of the edge of a plate sliding under another plate |
convection | the movement of hot fluid goes up and the movement of cold fluid goes down while less dense material goes up and denser material goes down causing the transfer of heat |
s wave | shakes the ground side to side very intensely |
p wave | shakes the ground intensly |
surface wave | shakes the ground upwards |
focus | the spot under the epicenter |
epicenter | the center of an earthquake |
Mercalli scale | Measures the intensity of an earthquake |
Richter scale | Expresses the magnitude of the earthquake |
moment magnitude scale | measures or indicates the size of the earthquake |
magnitude | indicates the strength of the earthquake |
tsunami | a huge wave caused by an earthquake |
liquidfaction | where soil loses its stiffness and falls |
aftershock | a small earthquake after the main eq |
seismology | the study of earthquakes and seismic waves |
seismagraph | a machine that measures the details and records the eq |
compression | moving land of the earth together |
tension | pulls the land apart |
plateau | a large area of flat land elevated high above sea level |
shearing | two pieces slide towards each other |
normal fault | the hanging wall slips downward |
reverse fault | the hanging wall slips upward |
