Climate Regions

TermDefinition
Weather Condition of the Earth's atmosphere over a short period of time
Climate Overall weather in an area over a long period of time
Prevailing Wind Global winds that blow constantly from the same direction
Current A large stream of moving water that flows through the oceans
El Nino A warming of the surface of the eastern Pacific Ocean causing changes in global weather patterns.
La Nina The water in the Eastern Pacific Ocean is cooler than usual-opposite from El Nino
Wind Air moving (sometimes with considerable force) from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure
Rain Shadow Dry region of the leeward side of a mountain, that doesn't receive much rain.
Climate Zone areas or regions where the climate is similar; factors such as latitude, mountains, and oceans affect what is found in the region;
Biome A geographical region with distinct plant and animal groups adapted to that environment.
Tropical Rainforest A biome located around the equator. Features warm, wet weather and lots of plant growth. Found in the Amazon (South America) and the Congo (Africa)
Savanna a biome characterized by rolling grassland scattered with shrubs and isolated trees, which can be found between a tropical rainforest and desert biome. Found in Africa and Brazil.
Steppe/Grassland Dry grassland that receives about ten - twenty inches of rain a year. Bushes and short grasses can grow. Called the "plains" in the United States.
Desert A hot, dry biome that receives very little rain. Drought resistant scrubs and cactus grow there. Examples: Sonoran & Sahara
Mediterranean climate warm, dry summers, mild wet winters. Shrubs, low trees and drought resistant plants. Found in Southern California and the Mediterranean region of Europe.
Marine West Coast Found on west coasts of continents in the mid-latitudes; Winters are mild and rainy; Summers are cool and cloudy. Thick forests of tall trees (evergreen and deciduous) grow here because of the heavy precipitation. Found in Northwest USA, Northwest Europe.
Humid Subtropical East coasts in middle latitudes; hot humid summers and mild humid winters, year round precipitation, coastal area hurricanes and typhoons; mixed forests; Found in Southeastern USA, Eastern China.
Humid Continental Climate with four distinct seasons; Hot, wet summers, very cold winters; deciduous forests. Found in Northeastern USA (New York) Eastern Europe and Western Russia.
Subarctic Climate zone that lies North of Humid Continental. Evergreen forests (Taiga) cover the lands in this region, especially in Canada and Russia. Short and cool summers and very cold winters. Temps` are freezing or below 5-8 months out of the year.
Tundra Biome found in between the Subarctic and IceCap; treeless land with short cool summers and long cold winters; low-lying grasses, mosses, and shrubs grow here. Underneath the topsoil is a layer of permafrost. Found extreme north of North America and Europe
Ice Cap Polar regions. Freezing Cold; snow and ice; little precipitation. Examples: Greenland and Antarctica
Highland Climate found in mountainous areas. Warmer at the base of the mountains, and colder as you get to the top. Examples: Northern Rocky Mountains (USA) and the Himalaya (Asia)
Precipitation Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth's surface.
Drought A long period with little or no rain.
