Lab Safety & the Scientific Method Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

Observing | the process of using one or more of your senses to gather information |
Inference | an interpretation based on observations and prior knowledge |
Hypothesis | a possible explanation for a set of observations or an answer to a scientific question; must be testable |
Predicting | the process of forecasting what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence |
Scientific inquiry | the process of making scientific discoveries by studying the natural world and proposing evidence-based explanations |
Variable | a factor that can change in an experiment |
Controlled experiment | an experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time |
Data | facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations |
Manipulated variable | the one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment; the independent variable |
Responding variable | the factor that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated, or independent, variable in an experiment; also called the dependent variable |
Scientific theory | a well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations, ex. the Darwin's theory of evolution |
Scientific law | a statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions |
Hazardous | involving or exposing one to risk, loss, or harm |
Flammable | capable of being set on fire; combustible |
Corrosive | capable of destroying or eating away by chemical action, as with acid |
Contaminate | to make something impure or unsuitable by exposure to something unclean, poison, or polluting |
Waft | to cause smooth and gentle movement through the air as with a wave of the hand |
