Law Vocab - Learn

Vocabulary for Canadian Law and Citizenship unit

TermDefinition
Law The whole system or set of rules made by the government of a town, province, country, etc.
Bylaw A law or regulation that is made by a local government and that applies only to the local area.
Rules A statement that tells you what is or is not allowed in a particular situation, game, etc.
Law enforcement The department of people who enforce laws, investigate crimes, and make arrests: the police.
To issue The act of officially making something available or giving something to people to be used.
Ticket A piece of paper that officially tells you that you have driven or parked your car improperly and that you will have to pay a fine.
Ticketed The act of receiving a ticket.
Fine An amount of money that you pay as a punishment for breaking a law or rule.
Penalty Punishment for breaking a rule or law.
Violation The act of doing something that is nt allowed by a law or rule.
To enforce To make a law, rule, etc. active or effective: to make sure that people do what is required by a law, rule, etc.
To comply To do what you have been asked or ordered to do.
To obey To do what someone tells you to do or what a rule, law, etc., says you must do.
Break the law To not follow or obey the law.
Demerit points A mark made against one's record for a fault or for misconduct.
Victim Someone or something that has been harmed by an unpleasant event such as an accident, illness or crime.
Offender Someone that does something harmful or wrong.
Witness A person who sees something such as a crime or accident happen.
