Trade union | Organization that promotes & protects the interests of their members, with the purpose of improving their wage & working conditions |
Types of trade unions | -craft Union -General Union -industrial Union -white-collar Union/ professional association |
Reasons for joining a trade union | -strength in numbers -improved work conditions -benefits for non-working members -improved job satisfaction -advice & support |
Collective bargaining | The process through which trade unions negotiate with employers over pay/ work conditions. Due to: -inflation -other worker pay rises -labor productivity rising -profits increasing |
Industrial dispute | Disagreement between workers & employers over pay or work conditions/hours |
Industrial action | Action to put pressure on employers to address their demands -official: has backing for their trade union -unofficial: doesn't have backing |
Forms of industrial action | -overtime ban -work-to-rule -go-slow -strike |
Effects of industrial action | -businesses: suffer high costs and lose output, profit & competitiveness -union members: no pay or even fired (unions may have strike fund) -consumers: higher prices/ can't buy goods -economy: reputation damaged by frequent IA, firms may relocate |
What is the Trade Union made up of? | An association of workers |
What are their main aims? | 1. To improve pay 2. To improve working conditions |

What is collective bargaining? | The process where much of the labor force working conditions and wages rate are decided |
A trade union's power to influence wages depends on..? | it's ability to influence the supply of labor |
How can a trade union influence the quantity of labor hours? | by: 1. Insisting that certain types of jobs can only be carried out by union members 2. Operating a closed shop 3.Calling a strike |
If wages increases what happens? | labor cost will rise, prices increase and members of union will be laid off |
Unions would bases their claims for higher wages on what grounds? | 1. an increase in the cost of living 2. An increase in productivity 3. AN increase in company's profits |
What is an Official Strike? | Majority of union members voted to strike. They will have the union backing. (Union may provide strike pay.) |
What is an Unofficial strike? | Members strike without the majority vote and without Union to back them. |
What is a No Strike Agreement? | Workers agree not to strike in return for certain contractual agreement from management. |
What is a Closed Shop ? | All workers in the company belong to the union. Union members can refuse to work with anyone who is not a member. |
What is Work to Rule ? | Workers observe all the rules and regulations of the company. These strict rules often slow down production. |
What is Go slow? | Similar to work to rule but workers also work much slower than usual |
What is Picketing? | Workers on strike march in front of the company with plack cards. Other workers are persuaded not to cross the picket line or enter the premises. (Demonstrations.) |
What is a Boycott? | Union may refuse to work with certain employees or machinery. This action may be taken if employees feel that their jobs are in danger. |
What is Sit In? | Workers block the premises ensuring that no goods enter or leave the premises |
What is Overtime Ban? | Workers refuse to work any additional hours. |
What is Mediation? | Usually a neutral third party chosen to hear grievances and come up with possible solutions. |
What is a Demarcation Dispute? | Arise when one group of workers object to another group doing a particular job. (The result of pay rate differences.) |

What is a Union Buster ? | Someone who goes against the union wishes by working during a boycott. |
What is a Shop Steward ? | Union representative in the work place who listen to the complaints of the members and report them to the union. |
What is an Industrial Dispute ? | Any dissatisfaction on the job that is not resolved, causing the union to take action. |
What is an Arbitration? | Where both sides of a dispute request that the situation is taken before an arbitrator who is a neutral person. |
What is a Conciliation ? | A 3rd party, usually appointed by the government to find a solution acceptable to both sides |
What is an Industrial Tribunal ? | Individuals chosen to handle industrial disputes.The group may consist of the chairperson a representative for the employer and one for the employee. |
What does the size of the union membership within the workplace depend on? | 1. Size of the business 2. The conduct and record of management 3.Success or lack of success of the union 4.The concentration of workers in an industry |
