First aid

Immediate care that is given to the victim of an injury or an illness to minimize the effect of the injury or illness until the experts take over. First Aid
A method of prioritizing treatment. Triage
Procedure of providing oxygen and chest compressions to a victim whose heart has stopped beating. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Injury to the soft tissues. Wound
Tearing of tissues by way of excessive force. Laceration
Caused by a sharp object. Puncture
Tissue is torn and partially separated from the victim's body. Avulsion
Body part is cut off and separated from the body. Amputation
Invasion by organisms; contamination by disease producing organisms or pathogens. Infection
Hypoperfusion, a clinical set of signs or symptoms associated with inadequate supply of blood to the organs (ie. brain or heart) Shock
Excessive blood loss. Hemorrhage
Excessive perspiration. Diaphoresis
Condition that occurs when contact is made with any chemical substance that causes injury, illness, or death. Poisoning
Any injury that can be caused by fire, heat, chemical agents, radiation, or electricity. Burn
Muscle pains and spasms that are caused by exposure to heat. Heat Cramps
pt. is diaphoretic, skin is wet, temperature is normal or slightly elevated Heat Exhaustion
Body is unable to eliminate excessive heat when exposed to high temperatures skin is dry, hot, red Heat Stroke
When body temp. is less than 95 degrees. Hypothermia
Freezing of tissue fluids accompanied by damage to the skin and underlying tissues. Frostbite
Break in the bone. Fracture
When the end of a bone is displaced from a joint or moved out of its normal posistion. Dislocation
An injury to the tissue surrounding a joint Sprain
Overstretching of a muscle. Strain
A reduction in the supply of blood to the heart resulting in damage to the muscle in the heart. Heart Attack
Occurs when there is temporary reduction in the supply of blood to the brain. Fainting
A type of seizure or involuntary contraction of the muscles. Convulsion
Caused by an increased level of glucose in the blood stream Diabetic Coma
Sterile covering placed over a wound. Dressing
materials used to hold dressings in place, secure splints and to secure and protect body parts. bandages
