8th- Clouds, Humidit
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cirrus | thin, feathery clouds that are extremely high |
Clouds | mass of water droplets formed when air above the surface is cooled below the dew point |
Cumulus | large clouds formed by rising air currents; can be white and fluffy or very dark |
Dew Point | the temperature at which condensation occurs; unit is oC or oF |
Dry bulb | thermometer that gives the actual air temperature; found on a hygrometer or sling psychrometer |
Fog | water vapor that condenses in the air near the ground; a cloud on the ground |
Humidity | a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air |
Hygrometer | instrument used to measure relative humidity and dew point |
Nimbus | refers to clouds; means rain used in combination with other cloud names; for example, cumulonimbus |
Sling psychrometer | instrument used to measure relative humidity and dew point |
Relative Humidity | how much water vapor is in the air compared to how much it can hold at that temperature; measured in percent |
Stratus | clouds that are low uniform sheets or layers of clouds; rain clouds |
Wet bulb | thermometer with a “wet sock” around the bulb used with a dry bulb to calculate relative humidity and dew point; found on a hygrometer or sling psychrometer |
