Meter a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in the lines of a poem.
iamb unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable
iambic pertameter a line of poetry with 5 iambs
Shakespearean sonnet 14 line poem written in iambic pentameter 3 units of 4 lines
quatrain a group of 4 lines of poetry
couplet two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme
rhyme sheme is the pattern of the end rhymes in a poem
allegory A literary work in which characters, objects, or actions represent abstractions
revolution An overthrow and replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed.
fable A brief story that leads to a moral, often using animals as characters
theme A topic of discussion or writing; a major idea broad enough to cover the entire scope of a literary work.
satire A work that reveals a critical attitude toward some element of human behavior by portraying it in an extreme way.
utopia an ideal society
dystopia a work of fiction describing an imaginary place where life is extremely bad because of deprivation or oppression or terror
communism A political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.
propaganda A negative term for writing designed to sway opinion rather than present information.
