8th Grade Earth Science FINAL 2

QuestionAnswer
What two factors determine the force of gravity? Sir Isaac Newton - mass of the two substances/objects and the distance between them.
What is the shape of an object’s orbit around the Sun? ellipse
What is the order of the 8 main planets going away from the Sun? Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mar, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What are the three rules for being considered a planet? Must follow all three: 1. Must ONLY revolve around the Sun. 2. Must have enough mass that gravity makes it nearly spherical. 3. Must be the most gravitationally dominant object in its neighborhood (orbit).
Which “planet” rule do most dwarf planets not meet? Don't follow rule #3 that "Must be the most gravitationally dominant object in its neighborhood (orbit)."
What is the difference between Terrestrial and Jovian planets? Terrestrial: rocky surface, not many moons, dense and small Jovian: made mostly of hydrogen and helium, icy cores, lighter and bigger, have rings, dozens of moons
What is significant about the Moon’s revolutionary and rotational periods and how does it relate to the view from Earth? The rotation and revolutionary period is the same, 27.3 days. Since both motions are the same, the same side of the Moon ALWAYS faces the Earth.
What two factors cause satellites to maintain their orbit around an object? gravity & inertia counteracting each other.
What was the name of the NASA program that sent people to the Moon? Apollo XI
