FINAL 2: Stars, etc.
8th Grade Earth Science FINAL 2
Question | Answer |

What is the Sun’s classification? | yellow, dwarf-sized main sequence star |
How is the temperature of a star related to its color? | Temperature is determined using star's color, Red is cooler and has less energy, Blue & violet are hotter and have more energy, Warm colors have Low temp, low energy. Cool colors have high temp, high energy. |
How is a star’s temperature, and brightness related according to the H-R Diagram? | It shows that small stars (dwarfs) are not very bright and are cooler in temperature,, It also shows that large stars (giant) are very bright and are hotter in temperature. |
What do low mass stars do in the Main Sequence stage compared to the high mass stars? | Low-mass- slowly fuse Hydrogen so they remain a main sequence star for 10 billion to trillions of years long, while, High-mass- fuse Hydrogen so rapidly that they only last hundreds of thousands of years to a few billion years as a main sequence star. |
What happens to low mass star in the Post-Main Sequence stage? | runs out of Hydrogen to fuse.- If there's enough heat & mass, it will then fuse Helium into Carbon, causing the star to expand and the outer layers to cool, forming a red giant. runs out of Helium to fuse so the Carbon core collapses into HOT white dwarf. |
How does red shift and blue shift relate to the movement of the galaxies in the Universe? | Expanding Universe. Doppler redshift shows that other galaxies are moving away from Earth. The further away the galaxy, the faster it is moving away. |
What happens to a high mass star in the Post-Main Sequence stage? | They fuse Hydrogen etc. expanding into a red supergiant. Iron costs too much energy to fuse so it stops fusing at Iron. Gravity gets too strong, core collapses into nucleus. The star's mass rushes into fill space, result is explosion of star- supernova. |
