FINAL 2: Waves
8th Grade Earth Science FINAL 2
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is the difference between mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves? | Mechanical: Waves that require a medium through which to travel. Electromagnetic: Waves that can travel through both matter & space (don't require a medium), like light. |
What are the 4 basic parts of a transverse wave? | Crest- highest point of a wave Trough- lowest point of a wave Amplitude- The greatest distance that a particle is displaced from its normal resting position. (height of wave) Wavelength- distance from one crest to the next crest |
How do you calculate wave frequency? | Measured in Hertz (Hz). frequency = 1/period |
How do you calculate wave speed? | speed = frequency x wavelength |
How does the Doppler Effect work for sound and for light? | approaching: sound & light waves compress, making pitch louder & changing the light to blue end of wavelength spectrum. moves away: sound & light waves expand, making pitch softer & changing the light to red end of wavelength spectrum. |
How does refraction work? | The bending of waves as they pass from one medium to another. The angle of deflection depends on the type of medium that the wave is traveling through. |
How does energy affect the amplitude of a wave? | The greater the amplitude, the louder the sound. The louder the sound, the greater the amplitude. |
What determines the type of light in the electromagnetic spectrum? | wavelength |
What happens to the speed of light from one type of light to another? | Speed- fastest in solids, slowest in gases |
How does the wavelength of light affect an object’s color that we see? | (Longest wavelength) Red - Orange - Yellow - Green - Blue - Indigo - Violet (shortest wavelength) |
