CLASS Adsorbent
MECHANISM OF ACTION Adsorbs toxic substances from the GI tract.
INDICATIONS Most oral poisonings and medication overdoses; Can be used after evacuation of poisons.
CONTRAINDICATIONS Oral administration to comatose patients. After ingestion of corrosives, caustics, or petroleum distillates. Simultaneous administration with other oral drugs.
ADVERSE REACTIONS May induce N/V. May cause constipation and black stools.
NOTES ON ADMINISTRATION Often used in conjunction with magnesium citrate. Will not adsorb cyanide, lithium, iron, lead, or arsenic.
INCOMPATABILITIES/DRUG INTERACTIONS Bonds with and generally inactivates anything it is administered with.
DOSE/ROUTE Adult 1-2g/kg PO or NGT.
DOSE/ROUTE Pediatric 1-2g/kg PO or NGT.
ONSET OF ACTION Depends on GI function
