Definitions of common poetry terms

Simile | a comparison between two unlike things using “as,” “like,” or “than.” |
Metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things |
Alliteration | repetition of the same first letter or sound in a group of words |
Allusion | an indirect reference to something |
Hyperbole | when certain words are used in a phrase to exaggerate an idea |
Onomatopoeia | when the sound a word makes mimics what the word means |
Repetition | when a word or sentence is used more than once within a poem |
Personification | a figure of speech in which things or abstract ideas are given human characteristics |
Figure of speech | an expressive, nonliteral use of language |
Oxymoron | a figure of speech that brings together contradictory words for effect |
Irony | implies a distance between what is said and what is meant |
Dissonance | a disruption of harmonic sounds or rhythms |
