Definitions of common poetry terms

| Simile | a comparison between two unlike things using “as,” “like,” or “than.” |
| Metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things |
| Alliteration | repetition of the same first letter or sound in a group of words |
| Allusion | an indirect reference to something |
| Hyperbole | when certain words are used in a phrase to exaggerate an idea |
| Onomatopoeia | when the sound a word makes mimics what the word means |
| Repetition | when a word or sentence is used more than once within a poem |
| Personification | a figure of speech in which things or abstract ideas are given human characteristics |
| Figure of speech | an expressive, nonliteral use of language |
| Oxymoron | a figure of speech that brings together contradictory words for effect |
| Irony | implies a distance between what is said and what is meant |
| Dissonance | a disruption of harmonic sounds or rhythms |
