Definitions of common poetry terms

TermDefinition
Simile a comparison between two unlike things using “as,” “like,” or “than.”
Metaphor a comparison between two unlike things
Alliteration repetition of the same first letter or sound in a group of words
Allusion an indirect reference to something
Hyperbole when certain words are used in a phrase to exaggerate an idea
Onomatopoeia when the sound a word makes mimics what the word means
Repetition when a word or sentence is used more than once within a poem
Personification a figure of speech in which things or abstract ideas are given human characteristics
Figure of speech an expressive, nonliteral use of language
Oxymoron a figure of speech that brings together contradictory words for effect
Irony implies a distance between what is said and what is meant
Dissonance a disruption of harmonic sounds or rhythms
