Anti-Hypertensives drugs used to lower blood pressure through various mechanisms of action.
Beta Blockers Lower blood pressure by lowering cardiac output.
examples of beta blockers Tenormin(atenolol), Inderal(propranolol), Betopic(Betaxolol)
Alpha Blockers Lower blood pressure by lowering cardiac output.
Examples of Alpha Blockers Cardura(Doxazosin), Hytrin(terazosin), Prazosin(minipress)
Diuretics Decrease blood pressure by decreasing blood volume
Thiazides Increase the excretion of Sodium and Chloride
Examples of Thiazides Diuril(Chlorothiazide), HCTZ(hydrochlorothiazide)
Loop Generate a larger elimination response than that of the thiazides.
Examples of Loop Lasix(furosemide), Edecrin(ethacrynic acid)
Potassium Sparing Weaker diuretic often used in conjunction with other diurectics.
Examples of Potassium sparing Dyazide(hydrochlorothiazide & triamterene combination)
Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors Interfere with the action of carbonic anhydrase in the kidney and also the eye
Examples of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors Diamox(acetazolamide) Trusopt(dorzolamide)
Osmotic Their action solely through osmosis
Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitors(ACE Inhibitors) relax the blood vessels and increases excretion of sodium and water
Examples of ACE Inhibitors Capoten(captopril), Vasotec(enalapril), Altace(ramipril)
Calcium Channel Blockers Block the movement of calcium ions cell membranes and cause vasodilation
Examples of Calcium Channel Blockers Procardia(nifedipine), Isoptin(verapamil),Norvasc(amlodipine)
Centrally Acting Alpha-Adrenergic Blockers Used in patients with moderate to sever hypertension . example Catapres (clonidine)
