Atmosphere/Water

TermDefinition
Atmosphere a “blanket” of gases that surrounds the Earth
Condensation process by which water vapor changes to liquid water
Conduction type of heat transfer from one material to another by direct physical contact
Convection type of heat transfer where circular currents are formed in liquids or gases due to differences in density
Density the amount of mass an object has in a given space
Evaporation process by which liquid water turns to water vapor (gas)
Exosphere area beyond our atmosphere; outer space
Groundwater water that is held in rock layers under the surface of the Earth
Heat a form of energy that moves from warmer areas to cooler areas
Ionosphere a layer within the mesosphere and thermosphere that contains charged particles; where auroras occur
Mesopause separates the mesosphere and thermosphere
Mesosphere layer of the atmosphere where temperature decreases as altitude increases; coldest layer; meteors burn in this layers
Ozone Layer layer in the stratosphere that protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation
Permanent Gases gases in the atmosphere that are always present in a fixed amount
Precipitation process by which water falls from the atmosphere to Earth’s surface
Radiation type of heat energy transfer where heat travels through empty space; an example is the Sun’s rays
Reflection process by which the Sun’s rays reach the Earth’s atmosphere but are bounced back into space
Runoff water flowing over the surface of the Earth
Solar Energy radiant energy that travels from the Sun through empty space and reaches Earth
Stratopause separates the stratosphere and mesosphere
Stratosphere layer of the atmosphere that increases in temperature as altitude increases; where planes fly, contains the jet stream and ozone layer
Thermosphere layer of the atmosphere where temperature rises with altitude; hottest layer; space shuttles orbit here
Trace Gases atmospheric gases that are present in a tiny amount
Transpiration process by which water evaporates from the leaves of plants
Tropopause separates troposphere and stratosphere
Troposphere thinnest layer of the atmosphere; where people live and weather occurs; temperature decreases with altitude; most dense layer
Variable Gases gases in the atmosphere that change in their amount; an example is water vapor
Weather the meteorological conditions such as temperature and precipitation in a particular location

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
