Properties and Matter Vocabulary

Define Thermal Energy. The kinetic energy of the moving particles in a substance or an object.
Define Solid. Firm and stable in shape;not liquid or fluid.
Define Liquid Having the consistency of water or oil, Flowing freely but of constant volume.
Define Gas an airlike fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity.
Define Plasma A state of matter made up of charged atoms, uncharged atoms, and free electrons.
Define Colloid A mixture that contains particles that are too small to see.
Define Phase Change a change from one state (solid or liquid or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition
Define Particle a minute portion of matter
Define Melting point the temperature at which a given solid will melt.
Define Freezing point the temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid when cooled.
Define Boiling Point The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas.
Define Evaperation The process by which a liquid changes into a gas.
Define Condensation The process by which water vapor changes into liquid water.
Define Volume The amount of space something takes up.
Define Mass The amount of matter something has.
Define Density The amount of mass something has in relation to it's volume.
Define Atom The smallest unit of an element that still has the properties of that element.
Define Molecule a group of atoms bonded together,
Define Element A substance made up of only one kind of atom.
Define Compound a substance made up of atoms of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
Define Physical Change A change that does not make make a substance into a new substance.
Define Chemical change A change in which one or more new substances are formed.
Define Natural Resources A material that occurs in nature that is essential or useful to people
