What does abiotic mean? It is an environmental factor that is associated with the activities of living organisms
What does biotic mean? It is an environmental factor that is associated with or results from the activities of living organisms
What does carbon cycle mean? The movement of carbon from the nonliving environment into living things and back
what does commensalism mean? A relationship between two organisms in which one organisms benefits and the other is unaffected
What does competition mean? Ecological relationship in which two or more organisms depend on the same limited resource
What does consumer mean? An organism that eats other organisms or organic matter.
what does decomposer mean? An organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutrients
what does ecology mean? The study or the interactions of living organisms with one another and with their environment
what does ecosystem mean? A community of organisms and their abiotic, or nonliving, environment
what does energy pyramid mean? A triangular diagram that shows an ecosystem’s loss of energy, which results as energy passes through the ecosystem’s food train; each row in the pyramid represents a trophic feeding level
what does food chain mean? The pathway of energy transfer through various stages as a result of the feeding patterns of a series of organisms
what does food web mean? A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem
what does limiting factor mean? An environmental factor that prevents an organism or population from reaching its full potential of size or activity
what does mutualism mean? A relationship between two species in which both species benefit
what does parasitism mean? A relationship between two species in which species, the parasite, benefits from the other species, the host, which is harmed
what does predator mean? An organism that kills and eats all or part of another organism
what does prey mean? An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
what does producer mean? An organism that can make its own food by using energy from its surroundings
what does symbiosis mean? A relationship in which two different organisms that live in close association with each other
what does water cycle mean? The continuous movement of water between the atmosphere, the land, the ocean, and living things
what does biogeochemical mean?
