Heat Transfer Test

Study Aid for Heat Transfer Test

QuestionAnswer
What heat transfer method is caused by rays or waves? radiation
What heat transfer method is caused by contact? conduction
What heat transfer method is caused by the flow of fluid in a liquid or gas? convection
What causes wind on the Earth? convection currents caused by the uneven heating of the Earth by the Sun
What color absorbs the most energy from radiation? black
What color reflects the most energy from radiation? white
Which heats up and cools down faster: the soil or water? soil
What word describes how close together a materials molecules are? density
What happens to a material's molecules when it is cooled? They contract (move closer together and the material becomes more dense).
What happens to a material's molecules when it is heated? They expand (move further apart and the material becomes less dense).
Why do some objects float on water? They are less dense than the water.
Why do some objects sink in water? They are more dense than the water.
How does the Earth's air heat up? Radiant heat from the Sun heats the Earth materials like soil and water. The soil and water heat the air they touch by conduction. Convection currents in the air move the heated and cooled air around allowing it to heat faster.
What term is used to describe currents that form in fluids (liquids and gasses)? convection currents
Why does cold water sink in warmer water? It's more dense (molecules are closer together because they have less energy).
Why does warm water rise in cooler water? It's less dense (molecules are further apart because they have more energy).
What general term is used to describe materials that can flow like liquids and gasses? fluid
If a metal strip is placed in the sun, what heat transfer method will cause it to heat up? radiation
If a metal strip is placed in a hot cup of water, what heat transfer method will cause it to heat up? conduction
What are the convection currents that occur in the Earth's air called? wind

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
