croup | acute respiratory syndrome in children and infants; characterized by obstruction of the larynx, barking cough, and stridor(abnormal breath sound) |

asthma | spasm and narrowing of bronchi, which leads to bronchial airway obstruction.(spasm-sudden, uncontrollable or involuntary, contraction of a muscle. |
atelectasis | incomplete expansion of alveoli; collapsed, functionless, airless lung or portion of a lung |
pulmonary embolism | clot(thrombus) or other material lodges in vessels of the lung. |
pleural effusion | escape of fluid into the pleural cavity |
pneumothorax | accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity |
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) | a chronic condition of persistent obstruction of air flow through the bronchial tubes and lungs. |
pulmonary infarction | an area of dead (necrotic) tissue in the lung. |
chest x-ray | an x-ray picture of the chest |
CT scan of the chest | A computerized reconstruction of a series of x-ray pictures of the chest taken as slices ina transverse plane. |
MRI scan of the chest | Magnetic resonance imaging of the chest. Magnetic waves are used to created detailed images of the chest in the frontal, sagittal, and transverse planes. |
Bronchoscopy | Visualy examination of the bronchial tubes. |
endotracheal intubation | Tube is placed through the nose or mouth, through the pharynx and larynx, and into the tracha to establish an airway and allow a person to be placed on a ventilator |
laryngoscopy | visual examination of the larynx. |
mediastinoscopy | visual examination of the mediastinum |
pulmonary function tests(PFT) | This group of tests measures ventilation (breathing) mechanics of the lungs, that is, the quantity of air moved into and out of the lungs under normal conditions. (a SPIROMETER measures the air taken in and out of the lungs. |
thoracentesis | insertion of a needle or catheter through the skin and between the ribs into the pleural space in order to obtain fluid from the pleural cavity.(surgical puncture to remove fluid from the chest) |
