Term | Definition |
---|---|
Acid | produces H+ ion when dissociated in water |
Base | produces OH- ion when dissociated in water |
H+ | Hydrogen ion |
OH- | Hydroxide ion |
Water | one of the products (besides salt) of an acid base reaction |
Salt | one of the products (besides water) of an acid base reaction |
weak | acid or base does not dissociate completely |
strong | acid or base dissociates completely |
neutral | pH of 7, [H+] = [OH-] |
formula to find pH | -log[H+]=pH |
formula to find pOH | -log[OH-]=pOH |
pH + pOH = | 14 |
Binary acid | use -hydro in the name |
Ternary acid | do not use -hydro in the name |
-ate turns to ? | -ic |
-ite turns to ? | -ous |
Neutralization | the reaction between an acid and a base |
