Self-Test 1 Q&A 6-2

Self-Test Questions Volume 1

QuestionAnswer
What are the four main LAN adapter driver types? Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS), Open Data-link Interface (ODI), Adapter Support Interface (ASI) & Packet.
What is a transceiver? An interface between the interface card and the transmission medium. It provides a physical and electrical connection to the standard 802.3 Ethernet cable.
What is a repeater? A physical add-on device that can boost and filter a cable signal in order to extend the length of a network.
What are some reasons for installing a bridge? To expand the distance or number of nodes for an entire network; to reduce bottlenecks caused by an excessive number of attached nodes; to link unlike networks such as Ethernet and Token Ring to pass packets back and forth.
Explain how a router works Examines IP address information packets and sends them to its destination. Routers maintain tables, of adjacent routers and LANs on the network. When a router receives, it looks to see if it can send the packet directly to the destination.
What are the different types of hubs? Active hubs & Passive hubs
Describe coaxial cable Made of a copper wire core surrounded by insulation wrapped by braided copper or metallic foil. Capable of transmitting voice, data, and video information, along with transmitting several signals at once.
Describe fiber-optic cable Transmits voice, data and video at far greater speeds than coax. Allows several signals at once and greater amounts of data to be transferred. It has no resistance to signals and no electrical loss.
Explain Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) drivers NDIS uses an extra program called the protocol manager to connect the MAC and network drivers to the communications protocol.
Explain Open Data-link Interface (ODI) drivers ODI allows multiple comm protocols to operate on the same machine. There are two layers to ODI: the Multiple Link Interface Driver, the actual MAC driver supplied by the card manufacturer, and Link Support Layer, which is provided by Novell.
Explain Adapter Support Interface (ASI) drivers Works with Token Ring network and not Ethernet. There are two parts. The adapter support device driver and the interrupt arbitrator, which sits on top of the NIC and passes the packets to the device driver. The driver loads from the CONFIG.SYS file
Explain Packet drivers A piece of software that loads either as telecommunications service request (TSR) or a DOS device driver, allowing multiple protocol stacks by reading each packet and passing it along to the proper communications protocol.
What does an Active hub do? Receives signal, regenerates it back to its original strength, and retransmits. Active hubs are also known as intelligent hubs since they are capable of shutting down a segment of the LAN without interfering with any of the other users on the network.
What does a Passive hub do? Only relays the information without regeneration of the signal. Passive hubs are also known as nonintelligent hubs, since they do not have the capability to do anything but relay signals.
What is the difference between baseband and broadband? Baseband can transmit only one signal at a time, like a one-way street. Broadband can transmit multiple signals at a time, like a highway, using radio frequencies.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
