What is a sand bar and how is it formed? settled sand in a body of water, it is formed when the flow of water slows and the sand carried by the water settles
What is a barrier island? long narrow piles of sand that help protect the mainland from wave erosion
What is a mesa and how is it formed? a tall, flat topped rock feature formed as running water erodes the surrounding rock
What is a canyon and how is it formed? a deep valley with steep sides formed when rushing water carves through many layers of rock
What is a moraine and how is it formed? long low hills, formed by materiel carried by a glacier
how is a glacial groove formed? when a glacier scrapes and scratches the rock beneath it
What is a landform? a natural land shape or feature
What is topography? all the kinds of landforms in a certain place
What is a glacier? a large, thick sheet of ice
What is a sand dune a hill of sand, made and shaped by wind
What is a delta and how is it formed? an area of new land at the mouth of a river, formed by sediments carried by a river
What is a sinkhole and how is it formed? a large hole formed when the roof of a cave collapses
What is the difference between erosion and weathering? W: the rock is broken down E: the sediment is moved to other places
What is a plate? section of Earth's crust and upper mantle that fits together with other sections, like puzzle pieces
What is a earthquake? a shaking of the ground, caused by a sudden release of energy in Earth's crust
What is an epicenter? the point on earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake
What is a fault? a break in earth's crust
What is magma? molten rock beneath the earth's surface
What is lava? molten rock that reaches earth's surface
What is a volcano? a mountain made of lava, ash, or other materials from eruptions that occur at an opening in earth's crust
What is the matter of the crust? solid
What is the matter of the mantle? solid
What is the matter of the outer core? liquid
What is the matter of the inner core? solid
What is the mantle made of? rock
What is the outer core made of? iron
What is the inner core made of? iron and nickel
What are 3 ways mountains form? 1. plates coming together 2. middle of the plate 3. plates move apart
What are 3 ways earthquakes start? 1. plates pushing together 2. sliding past each other 3. plates pulling apart
How do scientists classify earthquakes? by estimating their magnitude on a Richter scale
Describe composite volcanoes 1. wide with fairly steep slopes 2. made up of alternating layers of lava and ash
Describe shield volcanoes 1. broad volcanoes with gentle slopes 2. forms from lava that flows easily
Describe cinder cone volcanoes 1. tall, narrow, sleep slopes 2. made of rock, ash, and other solid materiels
