chemical equations notes
the way chemical equations are set up: | the formula for the reactants is on the left and the formulas for the products are on the right side |
definition of a chemical equation | when chemical reactions occur, two or more molecules interact to produce one or more unique or different product molecules. |
Law of conservation of mass | requires that both sides of a chemical equation show precisely the same number of atoms of each element represented |
the arrow in a chemical equation means: | yields; to produce |
balancing chemical equations | balancing requires manipulating the equation to show the number of different atoms are equal on the reactants and product side |
Coefficents | coefficients are the numbers that come before the "variables" in a chemical equation Ex. 2 H2O the coefficient is the 2 that comes before H2O you cant balance an equation without coefficents |
Exothermic reactions | a process that releases energy in the form of heat, Ex. boiling/evaporating liquid water, separating ions, and splitting gas molecules, etc. |
Endothermic reactions | a process or reaction that absorbs energy in the form of heat Ex. freezing water, solidifying solid salts, condensing water vapor, etc. |
Rate of reaction: | The measure of how quickly new substances form in a chemical reaction |
Collision theaory | "factors which impact the frequency of reactant collisions will impact the rate at which a chemical reaction occurs |
chemical bonds | compounds are formed , atoms of elements present, are joined together by transferring or sharing electrons. forming chemical bonds. |
