"The Restless Earth"

7th grade Unit 4 Study Guide

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 compositional layers of the Earth? Core, mantle, and crust.
Describe the crust. There are 2 types of crust :continental and oceanic. The oceanic crust is denser. Both contain elements of oxygen, silicon, and aluminum. The oceanic crust has twice as much iron, calcium, and magnesium.
Describe the mantle. It is made of hot, slow-flowing, solid rock. Cooler rock sinks and warmer rock rises during convection. The mantle is denser than the crust.
Describe the core. Scientists believe the core is mainly made of iron and nickel. It makes 1/3 of the Earth's mass.
List the five physical layers of the Earth in order. Lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core.
Describe the lithosphere and asthenosphere. The outermost, rigid layer of Earth is the lithosphere. The asthenosphere is a layer of weak or soft mantle that is made of rock that flows slowly.
Describe mesosphere and outer core. The strong, lower part of the mantle is called the mesosphere. The outer core is the liquid layer of Earth's core.
Describe the inner core. The inner core is the solid, dense center of our planet that extends from the bottom of the outer core to the center of the Earth, which is about 6,380 km beneath the surface.
Finish the sentence. "The lithosphere is divided into _____?" Tectonic plates.
Fill in the blank. "The tectonic plates move on top of the ______?" Asthenosphere.
Finish the sentence. "The continents were formed from one large landmass called:_____?" Pangaea.
Describe plate tectonics. Plate tectonics describe the large scale movements of the Earth's lithosphere. It explains how and why features of the Earth's crust

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
