cranium | the skull -the bones that enclose the brain |
diffraction | The word part fract means "to break". Diffraction is the breaking or spreading of light as it moves through a narrow slit or around the sharp edge of an obstacle. |
diffusion | The word part dis or diff means "apart". Diffusion refers to "spreading apart". |
ligament | a band of strong, flexible tissue that connects bones or holds organs in place -- from a Latin word meaning "to bind". |
pelvis | the basin-shaped cavity formed by the hipbones and the lower end of the backbone --from Latin and Greek roots meaning "basic" or "helmet". |
refraction | a "break" or change of direction of light, sound, or water waves as they pass from one transparent substance into another with a different density |
retina | the inner membrane at the back of the eye that is sensitive to light and color |
sternum | the breastbone --a flat, narrow bone in the chest that connects the ribs and the collarbone |
