Domain-Specific Vocabulary Science

TermDefinition
cranium the skull -the bones that enclose the brain
diffraction The word part fract means "to break". Diffraction is the breaking or spreading of light as it moves through a narrow slit or around the sharp edge of an obstacle.
diffusion The word part dis or diff means "apart". Diffusion refers to "spreading apart".
ligament a band of strong, flexible tissue that connects bones or holds organs in place -- from a Latin word meaning "to bind".
pelvis the basin-shaped cavity formed by the hipbones and the lower end of the backbone --from Latin and Greek roots meaning "basic" or "helmet".
refraction a "break" or change of direction of light, sound, or water waves as they pass from one transparent substance into another with a different density
retina the inner membrane at the back of the eye that is sensitive to light and color
sternum the breastbone --a flat, narrow bone in the chest that connects the ribs and the collarbone
