ES Plate tectonics

TermDefinition
Plate Tectonics theory that the earths' lithosphere is broken up into two pieces
Mid-Ocean Ridge Mountain Range of volcanoes at the bottom of the ocean
Trench A long steep narrow and deep depression in the sea floor
Magnetic Reversal When the earths magnetic poles flip flop is polarity
Asthenosphere Layer of the earth that has slow plastic like movement
Subduction The process of a denser plate sinking under another plate
Continental The type of crust that is the thickest
Transform Types of plate boundary where two plates slide past each other
Divergent Types of plate boundary where two plates separate apart
Hot Spot A rising bubble of magma from the lower mantle that remains stationary for millions of years
Convergent Type of plate boundary where two plates collide and form mountains
Orogeny The event of building mountains when plates collide
Convection Currents Circular movement of rising and sinking with in the plastic mantle which drags or pulls the plates
Oceanic The type of crust that is densest
What is the basic concept of Plate Tectonics? Solid plates that move over the mantle
Which layer of the Earth makes up the plates? Lithosphere
On Which layer of the Earth are the Tectonic plates "Floating" on? Asthenosphere
State the 3 ways crustal plates can interact at the Plate Boundaries? Subduction, divergent, convergent
State 3 major crustal events that occur where crustal plates interact? Trench, transform and orogeny
Types of boundaries where 2 plates collide into each other? Convergent
Type of boundary where plates move apart and magma rises from below to fill in the separation Divergent
Type of boundary where 2 crustal plates slide past each other transform
The mountain range at the bottom of the ocean, composed mostly of volcanoes and lave flows; forms at zones of diverging plates Mid Ocean Ridge
A very steep, long, and narrow depression of the sea floor produced by the bending down of a subduction plate along a convergent zone Ocean Trench
Why type of boundary produces a mid- oceanic ridge? Convergent
Which type of boundary produces an ocean trench? Divergent
Which type of boundary produces volcanic island arcs? Convergent
Which type of boundary produces shallow earthquakes and little to no volcanic activity? Transform
What forms when two continents converge and the two plates bunch up together? Mountain
What is the driving force behind the theory of plate tectonics Theory lithosphere is broken up into two pieces

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
