---|---|
Convection Currents | a current in a fluid that results from convection. |
Ocean Currents | a continuous, directed movement of seawater generated by forces acting upon this mean flow, like breaking waves, wind, the Coriolis effect, temperature and salinity differences, while tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon. |
Jet Stream | a narrow, variable band of very strong, predominantly westerly air currents encircling the globe several miles above the earth. There are typically two or three jet streams in each of the northern and southern hemispheres. |
Gyres | (in oceanography) any large system of rotating ocean currents, particularly involved with large wind movements. *caused by the coriolis effect* |
Gulf Stream | a powerful, warm, and swift Atlantic ocean current that originates at the tip of Florida, and follows the eastern coastlines of the United States and Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic Ocean |
Thermal Energy | the energy that comes from heat. This heat is generated by the movement of tiny particles within an object. The faster these particles move, the more heat is generated. |
Atmosphere | the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth; the air. |
Wind | air in natural motion, as that moving horizontally at any velocity along the earth's surface |
Air Pressure | the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on the earth |
Coriolis Effect | an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation. |
Anemometer | any instrument for measuring the speed of wind. |
Solar Radiation | the radiation, or energy we get from the sun |
