QuestionAnswer
Water Cycle the continuous movement of water from Earth's atmosphere to oceans
Nonpoint source pollution pollution which comes from many different sources EXAMPLE- fertilizer and pesticides
Point source pollution pollution which comes from a specific site EXAMPLE- oil spills
Evaporation the Sun's heat changing liquid water changing to water vapor
Precipitation water (in any form) returning to Earth
Condensation cool temperatures changing water vapor to liquid water
Transpiration evaporation off of plants
Currents Ocean water moving in a regular pattern
Tides the rise and fall of large bodies of water due to the moon's gravitational pull
Neap Tide when the Sun, Earth, and moon are at an Ninety degree angle, very little tidal range
Spring Tide when the Sun, Earth, and moon are in a straight line, creates a SUPER big tidal range
It is high tide at 8:00 am. When is the next high tide? 8: 25 PM
Waves the wind's energy moving through ocean water
Gulf Stream Warm current which brings warm water from the Gulf to the British Isles. It creates a mild climate for Britain.
Continental shelf Flat part of the continental margin
Continental slope the sloping part of the continental margin
Continental rise the deposited materials at the bottom of the continental slope
Abyssal plain flat land in the deep ocean
Mid-ocean ridges mountain chains which form at rift valleys
Seamounts underwater mountains
Volcanic Islands Seamounts which rise above sea level
Trenches long, narrow depression in the ocean floor
Crest the top of a wave
Trough the bottom of a wave
What causes the tides? The gravitational pull of the moon
Coriolis Effect the apparent "curving" of currents due to Earth's rotation
Deep ocean currents Currents that occur below the surface; caused by high salinity and cool temperatures
Surface currents Currents that occur at the surface; caused by global winds, continental deflection, and the Coriolis effect
Salinity the amount of salt in the water
