Volcano a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface
Lava when magma reaches the surface
Magma a molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
Volcanic Ash rock and minerals that you get during a volcano
Magma Chamber inside a volcano, magma collects in a pocket
Crater a bowl-shaped area around a volcano's central vent
Vent the magma leaves the volcano through an opening
Pipe a long tube that connects the magma chamber to Earth's surface
Lava Flow the area covered by lava as it pours out a vent
Ring of Fire a major volcano belt which is formed by volcanoes along the rim of the Pacific Ocean
Element a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
Viscosity the resistance of a liquid to flow
Silica a compound made up of particles of the elements oxygen and silicon
Pahoehoe fast-moving, hot lava that has low viscosity
Aa slow-moving, cool lava that has higher viscosity than Pahoehoe
Compound a substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically combined
Subduction the process that takes place at convergent boundaries
extinct volcano unlikely to erupt again
dormant volcano not active now but may become active in the future
active volcano erupting or has shown signs in the near future
Cinder Cone Volcano cone-shaped mountain formed from ash, cinders, and bombs
Shield Volcanoes gently sloping mountain formed by repeated lava flows
Composite Volcanoes mountain formed by lava flows alternating with explosive eruptions
Caldera hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain
Batholith a mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust
Lava Plateau high, level area formed by repeated lava flows
Sill forms when magma squeezes between layers of rock and hardens
Dike forms when magma forces itself across rock layers and hardens
hotspring when groundwater heated by a nearby body of magma rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool
geyser a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground
