Inside Earth 1-2

6th Grade Study Cards

TermDefinition
Radiation The transfer of energy through space is called ____________________. It takes place with no direct contact between a heat source and an object.
Radiation, conduction, and convection There are three types of heat transfer
Conduction Heat transfer within a material or between materials that are touching.
Convection current It is the flow that transfers heat within a fluid
Density It is a measure of how much mass there is in a volume of substance. Ex: Rock is more dense that water because rock was given more mass than the same volume of water.
Convection Currents Heating and cooling of the fluid, changes in the fluid's density, and the force of gravity combine to set ___________ __________ in motion
What causes convection currents in the Earth's mantle? Heat from the core and the mantle itself causes convection currents in the mantle.
Transfer of heat by conduction Ex: A cooking spoon in a pot on the stove. The heat transfers from particles in the pot to the spoon in the pot by touching.
Transfer of heat by radiation When you sit on the hearth by a fireplace and feel the heat of a fire.
Transfer of heat by convection As you heat up a pot of soup on the stove, convection occurs in the soup. As you heat up the soup on the bottom of the pot expands and become less dense, then it flows upward over the less heated more dense part of the pot. LOOK AT PAGE 16
