Chapter 7 Geometry Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Enlargement A type of dilation with the larger image than original
Reduction a type of dilation with the smaller image than original
Triangle The sum of the interior angles of this figure is 180 degrees
Quadrilateral The sum of the interior angles of this figure is 360 degrees
Midsegment A segment that connects two midpoints of a triangle.
Dilation A transformation that does not change the shape, but proportionally changes the size.
Transformation The operation, or set of instructions, that maps a figure onto an image.
Reflection A transformation in which a figure is flipped about a given line or axis
Rotation A transformation in which a figure is turned about a fixed point.
Similar Figures Figures that have congruent angles and proportional sides.
Congruent Figures Figures that have congruent angles and congruent sides.
Ratio A comparison between two numbers using division
Proportion An equation that sets two fractions equal to each other
Scale Factor The ratio held between two similar figures
Image The figure after a dilation has occurred.
Vertex The point where two sides of a polygon meet.
