evaporation | a process that changes water from liquid to gas form |
condensation | a process that changes water from gas to liquid form |
transpiration | plants give out water vapor as they "breathe" during photosynthesis |
infiltration | water moves from the surface into the ground, using pore spaces to move further down by the force of gravity |
percolation | water moves through the ground until it reaches the water table |
precipitation | any form of water coming from the atmosphere: rain, snow, sleet, fog, dew |
respiration | animals give out water vapor as they breathe to get oxygen for energy |
runoff | the draining away of water (and substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc. |
groundwater | water stored under the ground, either in pore spaces or larger bodies of water |
water table | the top level of the saturated area of ground water |
saturated | all the available pore spaces are filled with water |
pore space | all the open spaces between particles of soil or rock |
