Water Cycle Expanded Vocab. 8th Grade

evaporation a process that changes water from liquid to gas form
condensation a process that changes water from gas to liquid form
transpiration plants give out water vapor as they "breathe" during photosynthesis
infiltration water moves from the surface into the ground, using pore spaces to move further down by the force of gravity
percolation water moves through the ground until it reaches the water table
precipitation any form of water coming from the atmosphere: rain, snow, sleet, fog, dew
respiration animals give out water vapor as they breathe to get oxygen for energy
runoff the draining away of water (and substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc.
groundwater water stored under the ground, either in pore spaces or larger bodies of water
water table the top level of the saturated area of ground water
saturated all the available pore spaces are filled with water
pore space all the open spaces between particles of soil or rock
