Term | Definition |
---|---|
The Rock Cycle | The continuous changed cycle as they formed formation |
Weathering | The is breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on Earth's surface. |
Erosion | The process that moves soil or rock from one place to another. Also a type of Weathering |
Sediments | The particles of matter |
Deposits | To leave an amount of something overtime |
Organic | of, relating to, or derived from living matter |
Fossils | Organic. The remains from an organic organism preserved in rock. |
Fossils in Sedimentary Rocks | Most commonly found. The rocks form at temperatures and pressures that do not destroy fossil remnants. |
Fossils in Igneous Rocks | Not as common because they are formed from hot lava or magma and they would just burn up or destroy. |
Law of Superstition | Oldest rocks are on the bottom |
Theory of Plate Tectonics | The earths crust and upper mantle are broken into sections called plates. They float on the mantle and move slowly |
Theory of Continental Drift | The gradual movement of continents across the earth |
Alfred Wagner | Proposed the continental drift in 1912 |
Uniformitarianism | Assumption that all scientific laws have been the same throughout time |
Sea Floor Spreading | The Spreading of the sea floor from molten rock |
What Causes Plate Tectonic Movement | Convection of heat from the core of the earth to the plate. |
Types of Heat | Conduction, Convection, Radiation |
Conduction | Transfer of heat of something that is touching |
Convection | The movement of heat from liquids to gases |
Radiation | Movement of heat without matter |
Structure of the Earth | The earth is made up of 3 main layers: -Core -Mantle -Crust |
Lithosphere | Made up of the crust and upper part of the mantle. Tectonic Plates are made up of this. |
Plate Boundaries | 3 Types: Divergent Convergent Transform |
Divergent Boundaries | Pulling apart Ex. Mid Atlantic Ridge |
Convergent Boundary | Going together Ex. Himalayas |
Transform Boundary | Where Plates Slide past each other Ex. San Andreas Fault |
Subduction | When two plates meet one goes under creating a volcano |
Ring of Fire | A circle of plate boundaries there is volcanoes (Circles the Pacific Plates) |
Hot Spots | A hot mantle breach in the middle of the tectonic plates |
